December 11, 2003-
The Independent Bikers of Queens’ Annual Toys for Tots Bike Run was postponed last Sunday because of snow. The run will now take place this Sunday, December 14th. It will leave from the George Seuffert Bandshell in Forest Park at 1 p.m.
The bikers did travel to the Bernard Fineson Center in Howard Beach last Sunday with a small assortment of toys, and were able to hand-deliver them to children at the site. The Fineson Center has been the main destination of the Toys for Tots Run for 22 years.
This year’s run will instead go to an annex of the Fineson Center on the grounds of Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital on Winchester Boulevard in Queens Village. The destination was changed because the future of the Howard Beach center has been undecided for months.
Also new this year is a $10 entrance fee. Organizers want to raise $100,000 for disabled children. The Independent Bikers has provided the Fineson Center with new basketball courts, above-ground pools, electric hospital beds and other hospital accessories over the years. Riders and non-riders can also donate money to the bikers on the Web site www.ibtft.org.
The bikers are still looking for volunteers for the run, which is the largest and longest running event of its kind in the city. Between 5,000 and 10,000 people are expected to turn out depending on weather conditions. To find out more about volunteering, call 718-323-0448.
