howard beach should be gated off...only residents and guest of the residents should be allowed in.

How would gating off Howard Beach be accomplished? Streets belong to the city. To be able to close off access they would have to be purchased from the city. How much would they cost to buy? How much would they cost o maintain after buying them? Would the city even consider selling them so they could be closed off?

Sounds like a wonderful idea but I don't think it could be done. Only private property can be gated off. There would be all of the same problems, how and if to include new Howard and all that. The same old stuff, for years, haha. It's like almost a joke now.

The gated communities here in Florida are built on private land. Howard Beach is basically City Property. As in another post mentioned, the cost to buy from the CIty & upkeep would be tremendous. It seems the community needs to come together more and focus on Howard Beach as a whole, instead of "this is my small slice of a once proud community, stay on yours"....

I kind of understand where the "gating off" desire is coming from. It's not likely it will ever be done. We all remember what used to be but have to realize it's just not that way anymore. Gates would make it a lot more different than it ever was, that would not help the problem. It would not make it a friendly place and that's how I remember it to be. It would look like a "imprisoned town". No one wants to live in a war zone. The goal is to make Howard Beach like it was before, with people sticking together and caring for one another, not to separate them from the outside world. Howard Beach was a friendly place, as I remember it.

My grandparents built in the beach in 1924. To get in there was a gate and you had to know someone in the beach to enter.

I guess old Howard Beach could be gated off and that might be nice but then how would the Hamilton Beachers get in to use the park? That wouldn't be nice.

First came hamilton Beach, then the original Howard Beach, then Rockwood Park and then Lindenwood. They are all considered Howard Beach.

malo, I'm surprised you can say that. Hamilton Beach might have come first but it was never part of Howard Beach. May have been different in your day but my day was the 1960's and we were never together in that time. There was always something going on between Howard Beachers and Hamilton Beachers. Don't know how it is now, have been out of there many years, since 1972.

I agree with Lovely, I also left in 1972 and my impression was that Hamilton Beach wanted to stay a distinct entity, particularly since HB was being overrun by new residents after the subway came in. There even seemed to be some distinctions made in Hamilton Beach, eg the people on the boardwalk felt they occupied a unique niche.

My parents moved here in 1934. Grew up in Howard Beach. Only moved to Hamilton Beach in the 50's. Went to Jamaica to look up the books on the community. Hamilton Beach was in existence as summer homes.People would travel the Long Island Railroad to the Rockaways and Hamilton Beach got built up. It was originally called Hamilton Beach Estates. Then the homes became year round homes. Our zip codes are all the same. Hamilton Beach, Howard Beach, Rockwood Park and finally Lindenwood. All Howard Beach but called separate names.

I have been a city engineer for almost 25 years. There are MANY MANY problems with "gating" a community. Just to touch on a few .... fire dept, police dept, sanitation dept, ambulance would not have ease of access - - how would you regulate the "incoming guests"?, in small gated communities they call the owner but there would be a line a mile long waiting for the "call-in" - - there are way too many entrances to gate off , you would need to seal most and only allow one open gate which would again cause a HUGE backup while entering the area even for residents and where would this open gate be placed (any one place would be good for some and a hassle to most) .Finally ,in this short set, how would you stop pedestrians from entering, if pedestrians could enter at multiple sites the "security" would be breached and therefore defeat the system entirely
