This is a great web site and a lot of work went into it, can't believe that old and new residents have so little to add to it.
I agree with you Johnny.....I've been a member, and have posted here for years....it's a great site. I also post on the other Queens boards, and it seems they get a lot more activity....maybe it's because they also ost a lot of general interest themes, such as politicas, and non Queens related subjects, and maybe because the Broadhost system of messege boards are much easier to navigate.
In any event...HB was a huge part of my life from 1953 until 1975....I didn't live there, but had a boat at Cliff's for all those years, and can say I spenf most of my time when nor working there..and enjoying it a lot.
I posted here over the years. I think one problem is that when they changed formats for site, they lost all member information. That led to all old posts having "anonymous" as the poster. You go to an old post where someone asks about something or someone, and you dont know how to contact them outside of the original thread.
In many ways, it is interesting to get a new perspective on some of the issues that were addressed in the old forums, particularly those items which were posted several years ago and which a lot of 'newcomers' may not have read, I would urge people to take the time to do so. I have heard from several people since I started posting on the new web site and definitely intend to continue to be an active member. Also there have been so many new facilities introduced over the past ten years, e.g. Google Earth that make it possible to look at HB in detail and see how it's changed and also how it hasn't, these certainly afford a great many opportunities for discussion threads.
I intend to keep up with it here more as well. Good memories from folks posting stories here.
I agree, I also use the forum on www.havenzone.com which includes more communities. More people should use both forums. I know at HavenZone we are going to be flyering the communities about the site. I think with this site and havenzone it just comes down to getting people to know about the site. Once the site is promoted to the community it should see more activity. On HavenZone I mention this site in a few places. Hopefully while we are promoting our site it will also get some more people to know about this site too.
I'm surprised this topic has been around as long as it has and still has so little response. I noticed there are only a couple hundred users on this forum. I think you need a lot more to see a good amount of traffic that will keep all of these topics going. I hope more people sign up.
What really surprises me is that there is almost no participation by the 18 - 30 crowd. Amazing (and sad) that people who can't walk or drive down the street without talking or texting on their cell phones don't take the time to contribute to a web site dedicated to their neighborhood.
That is so true... I would think the younger crowd would be the first ones to post in an online forum, but it seems not to be the case. Instead things like MySpace and Facebook get all of the attention where they post things to people they will never meet. Here you have a forum that involves the very place you live and theres no interest. I would rather talk to people I might run into instead of screen names I'll never meet.
Just found this site today. I think it is great. Have a lot of looking around to do. I lived in HB from 1958 until 1987. I lived on 97th & 159 gradutated from OLG in 1972.
Go to GOOGLE.COM, select maps, then enter 97-01 159 ave 11414 in the search box. Little picture box will show up, click on the words STREET VIEW, this will position you in the center of the intersection of 159 AVE & 97 ST. If you hold the mouse in the picture and move it right and left it will make a full circle, you will be able to look up & down the street and find your house.
That is really cool... on that note for a quick laugh check out http://www.break.com/index/google-maps-is-evi.html
We recently added a "walking tour" of the areas on www.HavenZone.com using the google streets view. The link will take you right to the menu for it... It really is a great feature. It lets you go thru each neighborhood as if you were just walking down the street. I think they should add it to this site too.
