| What is it that still makes me smile after all these years about growing up in HB in the 1960's? Will our kids remember fondly the neighborhoods they grew up when they are adults with families of their own?
I think not!!
HB was such a special place back then. Lots of friends, lots of things to do outside, lots of fun places to explore, Cross Bay Blvd and favorite candy stores, bakeries, amusement park. Biking to St Helens to play roller hockey in their parking lot, sledding down the "hill" of the Belt Parkway, the "weeds" of the fringes of Howard Beach at Jamaica Bay. The wonders of the canals in "old" HB, the walk to take the "A" train and the wonders of "the City". Playing stickball on the Avenue, the marvel of Christmas lights at the Holidays, Cross Bay Lanes, fishing of off the North Channel Bridge, the Wooden Bridge over Shellbank Basin, the list is endless......
It was a special place to grow up in. Safe and secure, yet exciting and opportunities for adventure. I wonder what kind of memories our kids will have? |

| You sure are right....although I didn't live in HB I grew up there for the most part. I had a boat at Cliffs from 1953 to 1975 when he closed....what a great place. The way you describe it was classic for growing up in Queens. Our kids are surely missing out on that experience. |

| Everything I just read here on this page is so true! It's really a shame our kids won't have those memories that we have. We certainly did grow up in a great time! We are all thankful for that. |

| know what you mean. My family moved there in 1960 and left in mid 80's. I remember it all. I have been visiting it over the last year, spending time with friends from grade and high school. Lindenwood has changed, but is still a great neighborhood.
I have many good memories from it. |

| Howard Beach was and IS still a wonderful place to live and raise a family. There are excellent schools, churches and families. Many of our children have gone on to Ivy league schools and have been very successful. As for you zmann....once people like you started moving out to Long Island and elsewhere.....things really improved here. And of course....there are NO Long Island children doing drugs and consuming alcohol. Wish you well....dont rush back we wouldnt want your kind bringing the neighborhood down |

| I graduated college with honors and both of my children are in the top 10 percent in the nation according to new standards. We volunteer in our new community and belong to a great church. I have never been in trouble with the law and have always been kind to all people. I was warning people about your neighborhood. That post may open some ones eye's to the danger's and temptations to close at all times. I would suggest that anybody starting out now to move out of the the city. If you believe that Howard Beach is good place to raise thats great, but what I posted is true.

| I too have a Masters Degree and my children have also graduated with honors. You just sound quite naive thinking that such things only occur in the "city". |

| Does every topic in here have to turn into a fight? If you're having a bad day, stay off your computer, no one wants to share those nasty remarks! |

| I agree that people do sometimes get a little carried away on this (and other boards), I also agree that every one is entitled to express their opinion, but that is true regardless of their academic credentials.
BTW, it's a little disturbing to hear that a person who claims to have graduated from college with honors would:
"Love to 'here' from some old friends

Ray A.... What you said was beautiful and I appreciated it. I know you never expected it to turn into what it did. |

Hi,
I know it is some time ago that you posted. I am hoping you check back now and again.
My experience of Howard Beach was through my grandfather, Ed Butler, who docked his boat at Cliff's and was a member of the BayRunners Club. I spent a number of summer days on the boat with him.
I would appreciate any recollections you may offer about Cliff and the boatyard. If you might share or could guide me to any photos of same, that would be teriffic.
Thx, Jim McDonald

Happy St Paddy's day to all the current & old HB'ers. Makes me smile to think how HB is now almost 50% Italian, but when we moved there I thought of it as an Irish-American neighborhood. |
